Xidan was named after its historic Chinese arch, or paifang, and is located to the west of the Palace Museum in Central Beijing. Xidan is one of the city’s most important commercial hubs and Joy City is its bustling mall with a whopping 13 floors of fashion, food & beverage and entertainment.
The Shack design is inspired by the sweets in Beijing’s iconic Daoxiangcun bakeries, sweet shops that have dotted the city since 1895 selling more than 130 types of pastries typically molded into ornate patterns in pastel tones. The rose, jujube, pumpkin, lotus and almond delicacies are rendered in oblong green accent tiles, angular white tiles, sculptural brass room dividers and supple green leather banquettes. Streetwear brand PLASTERED 8 created four vibrant murals blending nostalgic Beijing motifs with Shack elements.
Tapping into the local taste buds, the Pea-ce and Love concrete blends vanilla custard, raspberries, shortbread and Beijing’s distinctive yellow pea jelly, while the OMG’oji whirls vanilla custard with dark chocolate chunks and red goji berries. Sales of the Pea-ce and Love benefit Beijing Golden Wings Art Rehabilitation Service Center for Disabled Children.
