Shake Shack® and Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry® campaign raised over $135,000–more than five times the original goal–to help end childhood hunger in America. Shake Shack staff members and guests helped generate donations for the cause as part of the first-ever Great American Shake Sale, an innovative fundraising initiative.

Throughout the month of May, Shake Shack guests who donated $2 or more to No Kid Hungry received a complimentary shake, valued at $5, on their next visit. From the outset, Shake Shack committed to raising a minimum of $25,000.

By the end of the month, Shake Shack’s guests had donated a grand total of $135,742. Its Upper East Side, New York location raised over $28,000–more than any other Shack and singularly surpassed the company-wide goal–while the Westport, Connecticut Shack received the most donations per guest.

One hundred percent of donations benefited No Kid Hungry’s efforts to end childhood hunger by ensuring all kids in the U.S. get the healthy food they need, every day. The money raised will support the No Kid Hungry campaign, which is currently working to connect kids to over one million more meals this summer.

Shake Shack and No Kid Hungry created the Great American Shake Sale to help fight childhood hunger in a positive way. Shake Shack gave away the equivalent of nearly 68,000 shakes through coupon cards.

With the assistance of Share Our Strength, Shake Shack trained its staff to help educate guests about No Kid Hungry and the issue of childhood hunger. According to Share Our Strength, more than 16 million kids in this country cannot always count on receiving the food they need to thrive.

“When Billy Shore, founder of Share Our Strength, spoke to our team last year, it lit a fire for giving and inspired us to create the Great American Shake Sale,” said Randy Garutti, Shake Shack CEO. “We want to thank every guest who made a donation to No Kid Hungry. Our team was committed to making this a success, and we are thrilled to say that it exceeded our expectations.”

“We are incredibly grateful to all of the Shake Shack guests who donated to help us end childhood hunger in America,” said Debbie Shore, co-founder of Share Our Strength. “Each and every donation helps us get one step closer to a reality where no child is hungry in our nation. We far exceeded our goals because of the talented, committed and professional team at all the Shake Shack locations that carried the message of No Kid Hungry and executed the promotion so flawlessly. We also express our deepest gratitude to Shake Shack founder and restaurateur Danny Meyer, who has been an instrumental force in sharing his personal and professional strengths to help our cause throughout the years.”

The Great American Shake Sale was inspired by Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale, a national fundraising initiative started in 2003 that encourages people to host bake sales in their communities to support No Kid Hungry. In the spirit of the bake sale, Shake Shack created seven new baked good-inspired frozen custard flavors–one for each day of the week–on its May Custard Calendar. Custard flavors included Lemon Chess, Oatmeal Crème Pie, Mom’s Coconut Cake, Derby Walnut Pie, Banana Bread, Mexican Chocolate Fudge Brownie, and Olive Oil Cake.
